Interview with a Mayan Curandera
a heartfelt conversation with my sister and mentor, Maria Elena Jiminez
I just am so delighted to share this beautiful interview with my sister and mentor, Maria Elena Jimenez about her calling to become a Mayan Curandera, the power of Mayan cosmovision, womb massage, the rise of sacred feminine, being a mother to daughters and more.
She will be leading sacred ritual and offering Mayan womb massage at my upcoming Living Pelvis Tulum Retreat October 25-Nov 2, 2025 - just a few spots left!
Why did you become a Curandera?
Maria: “From a young age, I felt a deep connection to the medicine of nature and the ancestral traditions of these Mexican lands — especially the Mayan cosmovision and sacred Toltec ways. I was inspired by a strong inner calling to preserve and share this ancient wisdom as a path of healing and balance for my generation and the ones to come.As a mother of three daughters, that calling became even stronger. I felt guided to develop my own medicine, rooted in the teachings of the grandmothers — practices that help awaken the sacred feminine and masculine within us.
Today, I offer these tools to those who feel the trust and synchronicity to walk this path with me, always with love and deep respect for the blessings I’ve been given along the way.”
Sarah: Yes! Mothing daughters in this time of feminine awakening is strong medicine, and I hear that it inspired you to rise up into your own wisdom more deeply!
What are your favorite ways to support women’s healing?
Maria: “I support women’s healing through rituals that awaken the medicine of the senses. For me, healing is about truly feeling the body, listening from the heart, offering our voice, our prayer, our song — and remembering the beauty of simply being alive.I work with the sacred elements — fire, water, earth, and air — as gateways to inner balance. I bring in the aromas of plants to align with the emotional brain, massage to release stored memories and wisdom in the body, and sound as a sacred tool for deep inner opening. In my sessions, I guide women back to self-knowledge, to pleasure, to presence. This is what I love to share and offer in service to those walking their healing path.”
Sarah: I really felt this was your deep calling in our first session together in May. The rituals we did that week had a potent effect that ricochet into the past to my mother and grandmothers, and forward into the being of my unborn children - and I FELT that. I knew it immediately that I wanted to dive into this work deeper with you.
What are the benefits of the Mayan womb massage?
Maria: “Mayan womb massage is a sacred practice that awakens the uterus. One of its deepest gifts is helping women feel the pulse of their womb and synchronize it with the heartbeat. When these two rhythms are aligned and in harmony, it opens a path of deep healing and inner reconnection.Through the hands, we gently support the release of emotional and physical layers — inviting the woman to truly hear, embrace, and reclaim her inner rhythms. This ancestral technique comes from the traditional midwives of the Mayan region of Quintana Roo, and it honors the female body as a sacred temple. It’s an act of love, of presence, and of remembering our own inner wisdom.”
Sarah: YES! LOVE was one of the most profound things about receiving this work from you. You're love translated through you're ands into my body and it was like I got quenched from an ancient hunger, an ache to have my body devotionally touched. I’ve received a lot of bodywork in my life, thousands of hours, and this was distinct and life changing!
What excites you most about our upcoming retreat in Tulum?
Maria: “What excites me the most is sharing with open hearts and feeling the medicine that comes from gathering as cosmic and divine Human beings. This retreat is a beautiful opportunity to transform, to connect, and to receive the gifts of this sacred land — the jungle, the underground rivers, the honey from wise bee guardians, the sea salt, and the new possibilities that each sunrise brings in the Mayan lands.I’m deeply honored to offer rituals and sessions with love, respect, and presence — always honoring the sacred wisdom that lives within each one of us.It’s a space to remember who we truly are.”
Sarah: I am beyond grateful Maria, that you and your collective of curanderas will be supporting the women on my retreat this October. It’s my greatest honor to interview you today, and to lift up your work. Thank you for being here today, speaking in your non-native tongue!
