Listen, We Got Some Bullshit Narratives On Periods
I went on a rant recently on IG, roasting the account @periodmemes, challenging them on their patriarchal taboo-reinforcing rhetoric.
I believe women’s bleeding bodies are intelligent, always striving for health, and I challenge the notion that ‘periods are god’s way of punishing women’. Also, I challenge the mainstream narrative that painful, disruptive, bothersome periods are just ‘part of being a woman’. None of that is true. Here’s what I said about that:
And this, with the uterus characterized as the grim reaper, portrays an organ actually having a hit out on you… this to me exposes just how disillusioned women have become about the power of their bodies and cycles. The vilification that the over-culture puts on our bodies has become internalized, and to that point, IG accounts are created to perpetuate this, with tens of thousands of likes for posts like this:
The commentary about how periods must be a sufferfest without pain medication - if that’s not written by ad-men at Advil…
There is not supposed to be pain, ladies. If there is pain in your menstrual cycle, something needs attention, it’s a message that something isn’t well. We have been taught to numb the pain rather than ask our bodies about it. Furthermore, we’ve been taught to completely ignore our body wisdom and trust the doctor or gynecologist blindly. This is dangerous for us, but ironically, convenient for them.
And for my final rant: you can heal your cycle. YES, YOU CAN. It’s never too late. It’s never too late to start listening. The #1 most common thing I hear from women after I teach them about their bodies, and how to heal their cycles:
“I cannot believe they never taught us this.”
I feel that outrage every day, and it fuels me to keep going because every woman deserves to know that her body is communicating to her through her menstrual cycle, and how to interpret its messages.
Did you know that your menstrual cycle is the 5th VITAL SIGN to your whole body health? Yes, it’s just as important as blood pressure and heart rate. But most medical institutions do not study it, teach it, or even understand it.
This is OUR wisdom, it’s women’s wisdom, and it can be remembered. It can be taught in every woman’s home in a way that stops all these stupid taboos from perpetuating. That’s my mission anyway. To make this accessible to everyone.
For now, keep your eyes peeled because I’ll be doing more education on this in the New Year, both locally and virtually. Women with Daughters, especially.
If you don’t want to wait, book a Menstrual Cycle Analysis with me today:
I hope you got something out of my rants, and if you have specific questions, write me in the comments.
